When a couple has been having unprotected intercourse two or three times per week for a year or more
( or less than 12 months if the women is over 35 ) without achieving pregnancy , one or both of the partners may be infertile. In reality , around 60 % of normally fertile couples will achieve conception within the first 3 months.
Having difficult conceiving is quite common. Fertility problems affect about 1 in 10 couples of the population. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after 2 years of unprotected sexual intercourse ( after 12 months if the woman is over 35 ).There are two general types of infertility : primary and secondary. Primary infertility is defined as difficult conceiving for a couple who has never before had a pregnancy while secondary infertility refers to difficulty conceiving when one partner previously has had a baby or pregnancy. Although infertility is not an epidermic , but due to today's lifestyles , many of women have postponed childbearing until their's 30s. As a result , more couples today are seeking infertility services. There are many risk factors for female infertility such as age , weight factor , excessive exercise , occupational and environmental factor or even emotional factors.
If a couple meets the definition of infertility , it is important to seek medical attention as quickly as possible. The sooner the problem is detected , the better the chances are for successful treatment.
