Side Effects of Treatment
The medications and procedures used in ART are rarely associated with complications. However ,
some potential problems may occur such as multiple
pregnancy and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
Multiple pregnancy is much more common in women undergoing fertility treatment where the ovaries are stimulated to produce more than one egg.
Studies show that multiple pregnancies are associated with an increased risk of miscarriage and premature delivery. Replacing no more than two or three embryos would reduce the risk.
Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome ( OHSS ) is an uncommon condition which can occur whenever ovarian stimulation is used and is a consequence of producing a large number of follicles. The symptoms of OHSS are the result of fluid accumulation within the abdominal cavity causing distension , discomfort , nausea and sometimes difficulty in breathing. In extreme cases hospitalization is necessary. OHSS is potentially very serious but can be avoided by careful monitoring and at present it is unlikely to happen.
